The Marine Protected Area Ciclopi Islands
Aci Castello
In the territory of Aci Castello, in the province of Catania, the Marine Reserve of the Ciclopi Islands was established in 1989. The archipelago is formed by the island Lachea, Faraglione Grande, Faraglione Piccolo and other four large rocks that are arranged in an arch-shaped form facing the town of Acitrezza.
Its name derives from a legend that tells of an enraged Polyphemus who throws large rocks at the ship of Ulysses who was fleeing after having blinded him.
Sponges, red stars, pike, sea bream and groupers, as well as colonies of Astroides calycularis, the arborescent Eunicella cavolinii and Seriola dumerili, are found in this sea and its lava stone bottoms.
Where the bottom becomes sandier, it is possible to meet the comb fish. More in-depth meet paramuricee and lobsters.
For diving's lovers, real itineraries have been organized to discover these depths through which you can admire the beauty of these places protected by the sea and be amazed.
